Boulogne & Christmas Market
This is a delightful coastal town bursting with heritage, culture and history that is within a very short distance of the channel ports and so an ideal excursion on this tour.
Whilst boasting a long and sand beach, Boulogne beyond the beach includes the 13th century ramparts that surround the Haute Ville (or upper town) with its charming cobbled streets and beautiful architecture, which look rather like a film set. It’s here in the upper town, also known as the Ville Fortifiée, that you’ll find the Château-Musée de Boulogne, with its archaeology, local history and fine-art displays along with the city’s cathedral, the Basilica of Notre Dame. Completed in 1875 on the site of a medieval cathedral, Notre Dame boasts the longest crypt in the whole of France. The oldest monument in the walled city, is the UNESCO World Heritage listed belfry, connected to the town hall. This square Romanesque tower, built between the 12th and 18th centuries, was spared during the Revolution because it was the only place in Boulogne from which one could keep watch over enemy ships. On clear days, you can see the southern coast of Britain from the belfry.
This annual Christmas Market is held within the Old Town Walls and is considered to be one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in the Pas-de-Calais region. With the cobbled streets of the Old Town and its picturesque charm, it all adds to the festive spirit of the Christmas season. Bologne’s Christmas Market features stalls displaying a wide variety of goods, there are arts and crafts, Christmas gifts, regional delicacies and local specialities such as smoked herring and Craquelin pastries
Please note that whilst we have a full day excursion to Boulogne, after allowing for travelling time and ferry crossings we should have around 4 hours to enjoy the town.
Canterbury including Christmas Market
England’s most famous cathedral city sits in one of the most attractive corners of rural Kent. The majestic cathedral watches proudly over the charming, narrow streets and old buildings of this wondrous city - a delightful mix of architecture, history, art, culture, museums, shops of every description, visitor attractions and good restaurants...something for everyone!
Once again the sparkling Canterbury Christmas Market returns to get you well and truly into the Christmas spirit. In 2020 there will be the usual wide range of traditional market stalls, great events, so make sure you don't miss out!
