The History of the Passion Play

The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began in 1633. The Great Plague descended and many lives were lost to this mysterious illness. From then the villagers made a solemn vow that if the lives of the villagers were spared, the whole village would perform a play every ten years depicting the story of Christ’s suffering, dying and resurrection. Miraculously, the Plague didn’t claim anymore lives, here began in 1634, the first enactment of the first play. This 2022, the play returns, with an expected 500,000 attendants.

There is over 2000 Obergammerau villagers that take part in this famous play, performed in German, and a textbook with the complete play text can be made available.
