Luxembourg Christmas Markets 2011
The city of Luxembourg annually hosts the 'Winter Lights' festival during advent, Christmas and New Year. The capital is adorned with more than 1,600m of lights creating beautifully fairy lit scenery of tree-lined streets and squares.
Luxembourg's location and mixture of languages add to the Christmas market's European flavour - you can find items from Saxony, France and more. The market has various gifts such as handcrafted items, heart-shaped gingerbread, toys and much, much more. Carol singers entertain and sooth visitors singing in Luxembourgish, French and English. Soak in the atmosphere whilst drinking Glühwein (mulled wine) or Drëpp (Schnapps). Be sure to try some local cuisine too! - Such as Mettwurscht (sausage), some pancakes, Thüringer (sausage) and the tongue twister, Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters).
Vianden Christmas Market 2011
Vianden castle is probably the most remarkable site on which to organise a Christmas Market. 'Instants de Noël - Magie de Noël' (Christmas Moments-Christmas Magic) - this is the theme of this Christmas Market inspired by the Middle Ages, which the largest feudal castle in the Eifel-Ardennes region is to organise on 17 and 18 December. The various rooms, be it the vaulted cellar, the Riders' stove, the arms room, the old kitchen, the dining room or the Knights' hall, will lend their prestigious surroundings to the sale of Christmas gifts or delicious seasonal products. In addition, there will be a live crèche. And medieval musical entertainment is sure to add to the festive atmosphere throughout these two outstanding days, when the fortress will open its doors until 7.00 pm (at other times, in winter, the castle is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, except on 25 December and 1 January).
Esch-sur-Alzette Christmas Market 2011
Another large Christmas market is organised in Place de la Resistance, around the Ecole du Brill and at the entrance to rue de l'Alzette in Esch-sur-Alzette, from 1 to 24 December. Adults can warm up with a traditional mulled wine, served under canvas for those who feel the cold, and enjoy roasted chestnuts in the large chalet with seating for about a hundred, while various performances will keep the little ones amused. Remember that the longest pedestrian precinct in the Grand Duchy, Rue de l'Alzette, is just a step away from the Christmas Market. A look through the windows is essential, here you will discover superb early-20th century façades.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office Advice
Stay safe overseas, know before you go
Whatever your reason for travelling abroad, you're sure to want a trouble free trip. Many of the things that often go wrong for travellers can be prevented or made less stressful by taking a few simple precautions. So it makes sense to spend a little time getting prepared before you travel, you could save yourself a lot of problems later on.
With this in mind, we are working with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to help British nationals stay safe abroad. The FCO website (www.fco.gov.uk/travel) offers straightforward travel advice, top tips and up to date country information to help you plan your holiday.
Tips include:
• Make sure you have valid travel insurance, even if you're only planning a short trip.• Visit your GP at least 6 weeks before you travel to get any vaccinations you might need.
• Read up on your destination, including local laws and customs.
• Make photocopies of your passport, visas and insurance details and leave a copy with a relative or friend at home.
• Register with the FCO's LOCATE service to tell them where you're travelling to so the embassy and crisis staff can provide better assistance in an emergency such as a tsunami or terrorist attack.
You can also find handy checklists to use before you set off and whilst you're away. Plus it's worth reading up on what the local British Consulate can do to help you if you run into problems abroad and what they can't do.
