History
The construction of the old town of Porthcawl began in the early 19th century, when the harbour was built to service the expanding coal and iron industries. Porthcawl thrived and grew as a coal port during the 19th century, and the harbour was extended in 1840 to allow larger ships to enter. However, its trade was eventually taken over by more rapidly developing ports, such as Barry and in 1906 the inner harbour at Porthcawl, leaving only the outer harbour operating. The inner harbour became a popular recreational area with boating and bathing until it was subsequently filled in during the Second World War. It is now a car park known locally as Salt Lake, but the entrance to the inner harbour can still be seen in the outer harbour area.
